Camp Pedee 2006

spcaLA’s Camp Pedee has created a steady following of kids who continue to come back year after year. Camp Pedee 2006, our most successful year to date, was a summer treat for over 200 8-13 year old kids.

When asked “What was the best part of Camp Pedee?” most campers responded by saying “Dog training!” This year’s camp included a more hands-on dog approach to training. Throughout the week, kids were able to run their dogs through a mock-agility course which culminated with an agility competition on the last day.

In addition to the agility training, kids partook in various arts and crafts activities, puppy and kitten handling, rat maze construction, and skit production. spcaLA’s very own Humane Officers spoke to campers about their very important roles in helping animals. Campers also enjoyed playing a round of “Farm Tag,” running a relay race, and spending time in the shelter visiting with the animals.

Older campers witnessed a neutering operation and a working-dog demonstration. Younger campers lost themselves in a maze at the Santa Ana Zoo, where we spent a day enjoying the sights and sounds of exotic animals. Both groups visited the neighboring El Dorado Nature Center and took a guided tour throughout the grounds learning about the wildlife in our area.

When visiting our Long Beach shelter in the upcoming months, be sure to look for our Camp Pedee 2006 quilt and stepping-stones created by campers to help beautify our shelter!
