VETERINARIAN

Primary Function: The Veterinarian is r esponsible for the daily medical care and sterilization of all surgical patients and maintenance of preventative health programs and medical protocol. The Veterinarian reports to the President and provides supervision for all veterinary technicians and medical volunteers.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

•  Promote the humane care and treatment of animal at all times.

•  Adhere to the highest ethical standards and provision of veterinary care in a safe, competent, professional and humane manner.

•  Provide direct supervision of registered veterinary technicians.

•  Examine animals pre-op to determine their ability to withstand surgery.

•  Perform surgical sterilizations.

•  Examine animals post-op as necessary to ensure appropriate healing.

•  Maintain complete surgical, complication, mortality, and controlled logs and individual patient medical records.

•  Comply with and enforce clinic procedures and agency manuals.

•  Maintain facility licenses as required by the agency and state law.

•  Inoculate animals and provide recommendations for follow up care.

•  Supervise cleaning program for prevention of infectious/zoonotic disease.

•  Continue research and maintenance of safe and efficacious medical protocol regarding anesthesia and surgery.

•  Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by veterinary technicians.

•  Supervise post-op rechecks and order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery.

•  Actively promote spay and neuter, and educate clients on responsible animal ownership.

•  Actively support associate staff and volunteers, and promote the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission.

•  Represent the spcaLA in a professional and courteous manner at all times.

•  Provide quality service to clients, volunteers, and staff recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization.

•  Participate on committees and special projects as assigned.

•  Oversees scheduling and supervision of all veterinary staff and volunteers.

•  Work with Clinic Office Manager to create and distribute work schedules for subordinate staff.

•  Adhere to agency safety and OSHA compliances policies and procedures.

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

•  Directly supervise all registered veterinary technicians and technician volunteers.

•  Responsibilities include interviewing, training employees, supervising employees in the performance of their duties, and providing performance evaluations and appropriate disciplinary action as necessary.

•  Planning, coordinating and directing personnel training and staff development programs. Prepare and implement training policies.

•  Responsible for the positive and professional appearance of the veterinary staff.

 

 

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to:

•  Obtain and maintain licenses and/or permits required by state law and the agency.

•  Perform up to 25 surgeries per day.

•  Visually and aurally asses the health and well-being of animals.

•  Ability to utilize fiscal management procedures, budgets, statistics, and other administrative practices.

•  Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, fractions and percentages to practical situations.

•  Read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, and financial reports.

•  Effectively handle problem situations involving the staff and public.

•  Respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or member of the business community.

•  Work well and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the public, fellow employees, staff and volunteers.

•  Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

•  Work efficiently under pressure and show maturity and good judgment.

•  Originate and execute projects with little supervision.

 

Knowledge of:

•  Fiscal management and procedures, budgets, negotiation skills and other administrative practices.

•  Basic domestic animal care and safe/humane animal handling.

•  Various breeds of dogs, cats and other domestic animals, various kinds of animal behavior and illness identification.

•  Usage of office equipment (computer, typewriter, copier, fax machine, telephone, etc.)

 

Physical demands:

•  While performing this job the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers; handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk loudly and clearly; and hear.

•  Requires the mobility to stand, walk, sit, kneel, crouch and crawl. Performs work that includes walking large dogs, lifting, carrying and/or pushing of 25 lbs. or more.

•  Must be able to tolerate loud animal noises and odors for extended periods of time

•  Endurance sufficient for standing and walking during entire shift.
