REGISTERED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

Primary Function: Under the supervision of the Veterinarian (s), the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) is responsible for providing the highest quality of care for surgery patients in our care. The RVT plays a crucial role in managing client relationships and educating clients on responsible pet ownership while maintaining a safe and effective environment. The RVT assists in the oversight of the animal care attendants and medical technician volunteers.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

•  Ensure and promote the humane care and treatment of animals in our care at all times.

•  Admit all patients into clinic facility; obtain medical history, and perform physical assessment during check in.

•  Under the direct supervision of the veterinarian, administer medications and anesthesia drugs; prepare animals for surgery according to protocol.

•  Report and document health concerns to attending veterinarian.

•  Prevent the spread of disease and infections through the proper administration of health examinations, vaccinations, treatment and observation of animals.

•  Assist veterinarian in surgery as needed.

•  Monitor surgery patients from the induction of anesthesia until full recovery has been achieved.

•  Administer animal vaccinations, tests, medications and treatments as directed.

•  Assess patient readiness for discharge and discharge patients by going over discharge instructions with pet owners.

•  Provide oversight with the animal care attendants and tech volunteers.

•  Supervise daily cleaning routines including scrubbing and preparation of surgical instrument packs. Ensure that exam room, surgery and observation areas are consistent with clinic standards.

•  Report employee or client problems to appropriate personnel.

•  Actively promote spay and neuter, and educate clients on responsible animal ownership.

•  Actively supports staff and volunteers; promote the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission.

•  Represent the spcaLA in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Provide quality customer

service to clients, volunteers, and staff, recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization.

•  Maintain all required records which include but are not limited to anesthesia records, controlled drug logs, patient information, medical inventory and supplies to ensure an efficient operation.

•  Adhere to the agency and OSHA compliance polices and procedures.

•  Work as a team member to meet clinic goals and objectives.

•  Provide excellent customer service and patient information for clients served by the clinic.

•  Perform other duties as needed to improve the functioning of the clinic.

 

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to:

•  Obtain and maintain licenses and/or permits required by state law and the agency

•  Maintain a high level of animal health and sanitation.

•  Detect symptoms of sickness in animals.

•  Monitor the animals for continued health on a regular basis.

•  Prepare written reports and maintain an efficient records system.

•  Work well and communicate effectively with the public, fellow employees and volunteers.

•  Originate and execute projects with little or no supervision.

•  Express ideas effectively orally and in writing.

•  Stay current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocol.

•  Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

•  Show maturity and good judgment. Perform the job in professional manner and work efficiently under pressure.

•  Work with and restrain animals of all sizes.

•  Successfully complete all training coursed mandated by state law and the agency.

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

•  Medications commonly used in Veterinary care, and their proper use and dosage

•  Symptoms of common disease of dogs and cats

•  Proper methods of safely handling and restraining a wide variety of animals

•  Animal nutritional needs

•  Knowledge and proper usage of common equipment used in Veterinary clinics

•  Various kinds of animal behavior

•  Federal food and Drug Act covering legend or prescription drugs

•  California Veterinary Practice Act

 

OTHER ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Physical Demands:

•  Ability to lift 25 – 50 lbs. on a regular basis

•  Extensive direct handling, carrying and restraining of animals, both large and small and carrying of supplies and equipment

•  Extensive stooping, bending and carrying

•  Manual dexterity sufficient for handwritten documents

•  Must be able to tolerate loud animal noises and odors for extended periods of time

•  Endurance sufficient for standing and walking during entire shift

 

Experience & Training:

•  Must possess a valid license (certification) as a Registered Veterinary Technician in the State of California.

•  2 years practical experience as a veterinarian assistant/technician

 

Working Conditions:

•  Dealing with possible unruly animal and handling the same safely and humanely

•  Possible exposure to hostile and over emotional public

•  Heavy and fast paced workload; strenuous physical activity

•  Possible exposure to parasites and infectious diseases

•  Must be able to tolerate loud animal noises and odors for extended periods of time

•  The noise level in performing this job varies depending on the task being performed.

•  Endurance sufficient for standing and walking during entire shift

 

 

Salary Range: $18/hour This is a full-time non-exempt position with benefits.
