Public Information Officer

Primary Function : Aggressively advocate for the Society, by running the day-to-day operations of the Public Relations Department pertaining to administrative, PR organizational, media and business duties with a focus on innovative marketing and skillful handling of agency policy.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities;

•  Increase the Society's visibility through grassroots marketing efforts, web appeals, social networking and pitches to the media.

•  Solicit bids from vendors.

•  Write, edit and produce agency publications, including quarterly magazine, monthly statistical information, brochures and informational pieces.

•  Assist in coordination of publicity, promotions, and marketing of events and/or agency programs.

•  Coordinate responses to miscellaneous inquiries from the public.

•  Maintain the agency video library (record, tape, edit, label, upkeep the index and checkout system).

•  Maintain the agency newspaper clips library.

•  Write press releases, advisories, and public service announcements.

•  Upkeep the check-out system of all brochures and counts for re-print purposes.

•  Distribute monthly pet list to various media outlets for airing; serve as spca LA representative on Pet-of-the-Week news segments.

•  Upkeep all PR files.

•  Assist with the web page upkeep and update.

•  Directly manage the Graphics Specialist.

•  Perform other duties as necessary to improve the functions of the organization.

 

Job Related and Essential Qualifications

•  Strong problem-solving skills, specifically involving the public and media as they relate to Public/media relations

•  Strong organizational skills, necessary to assist in reports and upkeep of records system

•  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both oral and written to aid in communication with the public, media, fellow employees and volunteers

•  Ability to fiscally management procedures, budgets, statistics, and other administrative practices

•  Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions

•  Flexibility to adapt to differing support needs created by varying work styles

•  Maturity and good judgment; perform the job in a professional manner and work efficiently under pressure

•  Manage multiple priorities

 

Knowledge of;

•  Basic Public Relations functions: including assisting in writing for media solicitation and assisting with press conferences

•  Media in our service areas (subject to continual updating)

•  Computer applications (Word, Excel)

•  Dreamweaver, Adobe (Illustrator, Photoshop) and basic design skills preferred.

•  Photography preferred.

•  Usage of office equipment (PC and MAC computers, copier, fax machine, telephone, pager, 35mm camera, video camera, TV/VCR, etc.)

 

Other Essential Qualifications;  

Physical demands - While performing this job the employee is regularly required to use hands, fingers; handle PR equipment (camera, TV/VCR, video camera) and controls; reach with hands and arms (putting up banners, etc.); talk and hear clearly. Requires the mobility to stand, walk, sit and kneel, crouch or crawl. Perform work which involves lifting, carrying and/or pushing of 25 lb. or more (info. tub for special events, etc.).

 

Working conditions - Dealing with an office environment in which the noise level is generally moderate, but on occasion will be high. Be able to be near, and on occasion handle with assistance, dogs and cats pertaining to PR functions. Be able to handle events/functions outside of office. Be exposed to all types of weather conditions and be able to work in such conditions.

 

Driver's License - Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License and car will be required prior to employment. License must be maintained in the course of employment. Insurable to drive a company vehicle.

 

Experience and Training : A High School diploma (or G.E.D. equivalent), a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Communications, or a related field, and proven job experience in such field. Proven excellent communication and team-building skills.
