ACTION!

What Is In a Name?

It is evident that the New York spca (aspca) is aggressively targeting Los Angeles residents for funds.  Maybe you have seen the multitude of aspca print and web advertisements running in the local media.  There are many who mistakenly believe that aspca is an umbrella organization that channels funds to spcas across the country.  This has never been the case and spcas all over the United States have to work constantly to make this clear.  This a matter of survival.  Without funds, spcaLA and other spcas would not be able to serve the communities which they represent.  The recent series of television commercials focusing on shelter animals is particularly successful in diverting funds from your spcaLA and other spcas in the surrounding area.

Such national advertising can be misleading to the donors who often generously give under the impression that the funds will return  to their home state or community, as is the case for many national charity models.  But again, there is no national spca that distributes donations.  Sadly, local animals are simply deprived of these funds.

Starting this week on Los Angeles' local CBS affiliate, aspca with Subaru Car Corporation is sponsoring "Pet Segments" that will run every Friday morning for 6 months.  My concern is simple: will Los Angeles viewers and animal lovers know the difference between aspca and spcaLA?  Will they realize where their donations are going and which organization serves the Los Angeles area?

I have no concern with those who are informed and choose to send their donations to New York City.  In fact, I am always pleased when people support the welfare of animals.   However, I am concerned about those who send donations to New York believing those funds will come to your spcaLA.

We need your help to spread the word!  Forward this email to all your friends, family, colleagues, email lists, groups, etc.  Let's educate our community on the difference between aspca and spcaLA and which organization serves the people and animals in need in Southern California.  Education is key!

Consider this...

When disaster strikes,

and in these harsh economic times when people may not be able to afford to care for their pets,

Dog in Kennel

and when you report animal cruelty in your neighborhood,

spcaLA Vet Dr. Halligan

spcaLA is there to answer your call.

Since 1877, spcaLA has served the people and animals of Los Angeles.  If you would like to make a donation to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA), please click here .

Sincerely,

spcaLA SHINING STAR

spcaLA is very fortunate to have outstanding staff and volunteers working for our organization.  Over the next year, we will be introducing you to some of spcaLA's SHINING STARS!  This month, meet:

Allison, Senior Companion Animal Counselor at South Bay Pet Adoption Center

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH spcaLA:   I've been with the spcaLA for five years.

BEST THINGS ABOUT YOUR JOB?  The best things about my job are finding animals their forever homes.  It is always so special to see a dog or cat that has been at the shelter for a long time finally gets to go home.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING (education/career path) DO YOU HAVE?   I received a BS degree in Biology and a BS degree in Zoology from Colorado State University.  I was also a retail manager of a large pet store chain for five years prior to coming to the spcaLA. South Bay PAC

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THE SOUTH BAY PET ADOPTION CENTER?   I would love people to know that the South Bay shelter may be small, but we have wonderful animals here.  Since we are so small, we really take the time to get to know the animals and can match up potential adopters very well to the right pet for them.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PET TIPS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?  My pet tip would be to make sure to stock up on flea control products now that the warmer weather is approaching and the fleas are out and about.  Flea control products can be purchased at all our spcaLA store locations.

DO YOU HAVE PETS?  Currently I just have one cat which I adopted from our south bay shelter.  In the past I have had rabbits, birds, and other small animals.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2009?   In 2009 I am looking forward to increasing the amount of animals that get adopted, especially those that are harder to find homes for such as the Pit Bulls and rabbits.

PAW'LLYWOOD WALK OF FAME

Visit spcaLA's pet adoption centers in South Bay and Long Beach and meet pets like Cory and Lucy.  Remember these animals might be adopted at any time so call the Pet Adoption Center   where he/she is staying in advance.

Love to play?  Meet Cory!   Cory is looking for a companion who is as active and affectionate as he.  He loves to chase feathers, ping-pong balls, mouse toys, anything!  When you're done playing let Cory jump in your lap and snuggle.  Cory's soft-slip number is 09-02073 and he is currently residing at the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village in Long Beach.  After you adopt Cory, get him some fun toys to play with at the spcaLA Marketplace .     Click here  for coupons.

Bowden

Ralphi I Love Lucy!  This is Lucy, a lovely cinnamon colored Pit Bull mix at South Bay Pet Adoption Center in Hawthorne.   She is the sweetest girl around!  She loves to give kisses and get belly rubs.  She knows how to sit and she likes chomping on yummy treats.  Lucy's brother, Linus was adopted and Lucy is looking for her forever home, too.  Lucy's soft-slip number is 09-02275. Like all ladies, Lucy would like to be pampered so treat her to a blueberry facial at the spcaLA Grooming Salon Click here   for coupons.
