HELP spcaLA as we provide aid
during
HURRICANE IKE relief efforts
September 22, 2008 – spcaLA's Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) began the long trip home on Sunday, after having had provided rescue and relief to animals in one of the areas hardest-hit by Hurricane Ike: Galveston, TX.
After Hurricane Ike, one of the most common reasons owners asked spcaLA to save their pets was that of foresight. Owners did not believe reports that Ike would leave as much devastation as it did, and assumed they would be back in their homes in a day or two. Now, nine days after the storm, the island of Galveston has not yet reopened.
One of the first-responders to Hurricane Ike, DART spent five days digging animals out of the rubble in Galveston. A second-wave of humane organizations will take over operations in Galveston, coordinating the reunions with pets and their owners. Animals rescued by spcaLA currently reside at either the Houston SPCA or temporary holding stations; their holding locations are clearly posted on pet owners' properties.
Dispatched to Texas on September 13, 2008, spcaLA's DART was one of only 8 humane organizations permitted in such danger zones as Galveston. While there, DART went on over 100 search-and-rescue missions, saving countless cats, dogs, horses, birds and other animals.
